What is a model WHO assembly?
The model WHO assembly is a simulation of World Health Organisation debates. One month before the summer school, delegates will receive a short document with the essential background information necessary to understand the topic. Delegates will be expected to read this and do a small amount of reading so that they understand the position of their allocated member state. On the day itself, Manchester Model United Nations Society will provide delegates with a short demonstration of debating style. Their committee will be there throughout the event to help delegates and chair the discussion. Delegates will be allocated to member states in pairs so that they can work together to contribute to discussion. Experienced doctors will be on hand to answer points of interest. This debate is meant to be fun, rather than intimidating so please do not worry about doing lots of reading- just a general idea of your allocated member state's position on the subject will do.
What if I don't want to speak?
The assembly will last just over three hours and so it unlikely that all students will get to speak. You will be in pairs and so you can choose one to be the speaker. If neither of you want to contribute, it is fine for you to watch and enjoy the discussion going on amongst your peers or for you to ask questions!
