Advanced Operative Vascular Surgery: A Cadaveric Training Course for Vascular Surgeons
29th July 2025
Department of Anatomy, School of Biosciences, Cardiff University
About:
This intensive one-day cadaveric training course for vascular surgeons offers structured, hands-on experience in a comprehensive set of vascular procedures performed on unembalmed fresh frozen cadaveric specimens to closely simulate live operative conditions.
The procedures covered include brachial artery exposure, brachial artery repair or bypass, common femoral artery exposure, femoropopliteal and femoro-femoral bypass procedures, popliteal artery exposure (above and below knee), and tibial artery exposure with distal bypass techniques. The key operative principles in carotid endarterectomy, exposures of the subclavian and vertebral arteries, and creation of arteriovenous fistulae (radiocephalic and brachiocephalic) will also be covered.
Attendees will work in pairs under the direct supervision of consultant vascular surgeons. Emphasis will be placed on anatomical exposure, surgical technique, handling of vascular instruments, avoidance of complications, and optimisation of outcomes.
Each procedure will be preceded by a focused anatomical overview, indications and contraindications, patient positioning, incision planning, stepwise dissection, vessel control, and reconstruction techniques. Operative pitfalls and management of intraoperative complications will also be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the course, attendees will be able to:
- appreciate the anatomy, indications, and operative steps for each vascular procedure.
- perform surgical approaches to major arteries of the neck, upper limb, and lower limb.
- practise vessel control, dissection, and vascular suturing techniques.
- identify and preserve adjacent critical structures (nerves, veins, and bony landmarks).
- manage technical difficulties such as atherosclerosis, anatomical variation, and post-traumatic changes.
- enhance operative confidence and skill acquisition in a low-risk, high-fidelity environment.
The course is aligned with the ISCP curriculum and will be suitable for inclusion in the portfolio. A certificate of completion will be issued.
