This lecture explores what makes paediatrics a unique, holistic and fulfilling speciality, as well as how early growth and development influence adult health. The talk will focus on the first year of human life and the adaptations and challenges faced by the transition from life in the womb to the outside world. It will also provide an overview and a structured approach to understanding common problems in infants and their presentations.

The talk is delivered by Dr M. Dandapani, who is a Consultant Paediatric Oncologist at the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham. With her clinical expertise in paediatric solid tumours and brain tumours, she leads the Children's Brain Tumour Research Centre in Nottingham, with a special interest in tumour metabolism, targeted therapies and biomarker identification.
