About:

This series of 15 succinct structured webinars conducted between November 2022 – May 2023 is intended to provide foundation year and core trainees in surgery a comprehensive overview of orthopaedic conditions and emergencies that are relevant at that stage of training. In addition to providing the knowledge required for clinical practice, the teaching sessions will also be useful for those appearing for MRCS A and MRCS OSCE exams in 2023. All sessions have CPD points (one point per session), and will be based on the current practice guidelines including ATLS, NICE and BOAST, as well as the CST curriculum.

Session 1: Orthopaedic Emergencies (Thursday, 17th November 2022: 1800 - 1900 hours.)

Session 2: Trauma Basics - 1 (Thursday, 1st December 2022: 1800 - 1900 hours.)

  • Basics of fracture healing, relevant anatomy and physiology of bony injury

  • Closed reduction techniques (including Charnley’s)
  • Casting principles and techniques
  • Acceptability of angulation vs need for further interventions
  • When to slab, when to cast, when not to manipulate

Session 3: Trauma Basics – 2 (Thursday, 15th December 2022: 1800 - 1900 hours.)

  • Commonly used metalwork in orthopaedics: drills, K-wires, plates, screws, nails
  • Techniques of employment: lag screw, dynamic hip screw, bridge plating, compression plating, tension band wiring

  • Conservative and surgical options: supracondylar fractures, forearm and wrist fractures, ankle fractures. Others: femoral, tibial, clavicle, humeral fractures

Session 9: Perioperative Care, Safe and Effective Operating (In March 2023 – Date TBC: 1800 - 1900 hours.)

Session 12: Infections and Tumours (In March 2023 – Date TBC: 1800 - 1900 hours.)

  • Musculoskeletal infections: adults and children. Fracture-related infection
  • Musculoskeletal oncology including bony metastasis: adults and children
  • Session 13: Patient Safety and Communication Skills in T&O, Rehabilitation (In April 2023 – Date TBC: 1800 - 1900 hours.)

    • WHO checklist, time out and sign out
    • Communication with patients: capacity assessment, POA, consenting
    • Communication with anaesthetic staff and scrub teams
    • Communication throughout procedure: dynamics of theatre
    • When something goes wrong on the floor and/or in theatre. Crisis management
