Global Health and Undergraduate Research Opportunities: A Teaching Series

This teaching series, held in conjunction with Keele University School of Medicine and São Paulo State University (UNESP), invites students, nurses, pharmacists and doctors from the United Kingdom, Brazil and the United States of America to come together to listen to speakers with global health or research experience. Across the teaching series, various topics will be discussed, including:
- Malaria, Ebola, HIV, Tuberculosis, Leishmaniasis and Trypanosomiasis
- Humanitarian aid work and communicable disease research in the Philippines, Haiti, India, Brazil, Liberia and Sierre Leone
- Global health medical and surgical organisations for nurses and doctors
- Student research opportunities: what is available, the application process, how to find internships, and how to network to find the best research project for you
- Intercalation: how to apply, pros and cons, and its application to your future career
- International medical students studying in the UK: how to navigate the UKFP application process and documents you require from your home country
- Specialised/Academic Foundation Programme: how to apply, pros and cons, and its application to your future career
Title: Rural Health Experiences in Brazil and the Philippines

Director for Research in the school of Life Sciences at Keele University
Dr Price’s research focuses on understanding the cell biology of the protozoan parasites Leishmania and Trypanosoma brucei and exploiting this knowledge towards the development of new therapeutics. She has received funding from the MRC, Newton Fund, Wellcome Trust and the Royal Society. Her current projects include investigation of the roles of the BBSome protein complex in L. mexicana and drug discovery for the veterinary parasite T. evansi. She is also co-leading ECLIPSE with Professor Lisa Dikomitis at Keele University. This is a four-year £4.6M project funded by the UK's National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), which aims to reduce stigma and improve the patient journey for people living with cutaneous leishmaniasis in Brazil, Ethiopia and Sri Lanka.

Frances was one of four students to win the esteemed SOLACE student competition which included a trip to study rural healthcare in the Philippines. She will be discussing the application process, aspects of her trip, and the research she carried out while there.

A critical care nurse for 10 years in the United States of America, and a former Ebola emergency responder in the 2015 West African Ebola crisis, Maria will discuss what PHEICs are, why they are important to medical students, and how her work in India and Africa applies to students. Volunteer organisations for students, nurses and doctors will be discussed in detail.

Nonyelum was the first-ever student to be recruited for a prestigious DATA-CAN internship as part of the 10,000 Black Interns Initiative. As part of the programme, Health Data Research UK (HDR UK) brought together partners in data science, including DATA-CAN, to tackle the underrepresentation of Black people in the sector. The paid internships are providing young Black people with the opportunity to experience a range of careers in health data science.
An experienced nurse, Jeanne will be discussing her work with HIV and TB patients in Haiti, her work with MMRC Global taking care of patients with cholera in Borgne, Haiti, and her time as an emergency nurse responder in the 2015 West African Ebola crisis with Partners in Health.

This talk will discuss several exchange projectswith the Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu (FMB), Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) in Brazil.This includes hosting Year 5 elective students from Brazil to gain first-hand experience of the workings of the NHS, as well as allowing UK medical students to undertake summer studentships in their research centres, including notably in dengue and Zika virus-related research.
UK students can also attend the Winter School in Tropical Diseases at FMB each year and experience medical conditions that are uncommon in the UK.In addition, we have pioneered an innovative virtual exchange project known as BraVE (Brazilian Virtual Exchange) which allows early year Keele medical students to study together with their Brazilian counterparts on topics ranging from maternal health to epidemic diseases.

This talk will discuss the application process and tips and tricks for applying for research grants and projects between years 2 and 3 of medicine, as well as intercalation during clinical years. Application advice for intercalation with pros and cons will be followed,with step-by-step guidance for Wellcome Trust and British Biochemical Societies Vacation Scholarship proposals.

This talk is very specific to students from outside the UK who are graduating from a UK medical school and applying for training in the UK during the 2022-2023 academic year. This talk will cover the extensive steps required to claim points for international undergraduate degrees and the Oriel application process. As an added note, this talk is NOT for eligibility applicants applying to the UK Foundation Programme who will NOT have a medical degree from the UK.
