ICSM Spring Conference 2020: Mind Over Matter

The ICSM Psychiatry Society’s Spring Conference: Mind Over Matter is a student-led event being held on Saturday 15th February 2020 in the Sir Alexander Fleming Building, Imperial College London.

The conference will include lectures from admirable speakers on a variety of topics surrounding Psychiatry in addition to two small-group sessions. The conference aims to give delegates the opportunity to share their views and enable them to communicate with experienced psychiatrists.

The ICSM Psychiatry Society will also be hosting an art and essay competition and a raffle. Lunch and refreshments will be provided and all attendees will be presented with a certificate of attendance.


Art Competition and Essay Competition


ICSM Psychiatry Society is running an Art and Essay Competition for which submissions are welcome.

For the Art Competition, delegates are invited to submit artwork including a painting, music or sculpture based on the question: ‘What does the inside of your mind look like to you?’. All entries will be showcased during the conference and a winner will be chosen by a conference speaker. The winner will receive a prize and a certificate. Entrance to the competition is free. Artwork submissions must be received no later than Monday 10th February 2020 and should be submitted to the following link: https://bit.ly/37Tv3FY.

For the Essay Competition, delegates are invited to submit an essay based on the following title: 'Discuss the influence of technology and social media on mental health in the modern age.' A word limit of 3000 words (excluding references) applies. Applicants should use size 12 Arial font, which should be double spaced and submitted in Word/PDF format. Entries will be judged by a conference speaker and the winner will receive a prize and a certificate. Entrance to the competition is free, however, you must attend the conference. Essay submissions must be received no later than Saturday 1st February 2020 and should be submitted to LC3715@IC.AC.UK.

Aims and Objectives:

  • To educate medical students and professionals regarding a career in Psychiatry.
  • To promote the importance of mental health as a topic and theme regardless of medical specialities.
  • To reveal the broad range of sub-specialities and research opportunities that a career in Psychiatry has to offer.

    Delve into what a day in the life of a psychiatrist entails, what sub-specialities a career in Psychiatry has to offer and why it could be the right career pathway for you.
  • Chimp Management in Elite Sport (Dr John Barker)
    From the company 'Chimp Management', owned by Professor Steve Peters, author of 'The Chimp Paradox', this small-group session will revolve around how the Chimp model is used to help athletes achieve mental wellbeing and maximise their performance.
  • Mental Health – Technology and the Media (Dr Mina Husain)
    Run by a psychiatrist and film producer, this small-group session will focus on the influence of film and digital technology on mental health in the 21st century.
  • GHB – A Dangerous New High (Dr Betty Xu)
    A case discussion surrounding the topic of drug addiction and the club drug scene, delving into the withdrawal of drugs and the difficulties surrounding gender identity.
