About

This intensive two-day hybrid course (one day virtual and one day face-to-face) provides comprehensive theoretical and practical training in the ultrasound evaluation of the infant hip, based on the internationally recognised Graf method. It is designed for orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists, sonographers, and other clinicians involved in DDH screening and diagnosis. The course begins with a detailed overview of the anatomy of the infant hip and the underlying pathology of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), followed by in-depth sessions on the interpretation of ultrasound appearances and classification according to the Graf system.

Participants receive structured guidance on the correct ultrasound scan planes, probe orientation, and positioning to ensure reproducible, high-quality imaging. The programme integrates live demonstrations, supervised hands-on scanning sessions, and film-viewing exercises to reinforce both image acquisition and interpretation. Further sessions focus on ultrasound-based management principles for DDH, the role of imaging in clinical decision-making, and the establishment of effective hip-ultrasound services. Updates on the UK National “At-Risk” Screening Programme and international standards in DDH care are also included.

By combining anatomy, pathology, sonographic technique, and clinical application, the course ensures that participants gain a robust understanding of the principles of hip sonography and are equipped with the skills to perform and interpret Graf-based hip ultrasound examinations confidently in their own clinical environments.

Aims

  • To provide comprehensive understanding of infant hip anatomy and DDH pathology.
  • To teach correct Graf ultrasound scanning planes and measurement techniques.
  • To develop confidence in classifying ultrasound appearances of DDH.
  • To integrate ultrasound findings into the clinical management of DDH.
  • To guide participants in establishing or improving a hip ultrasound screening service.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the anatomy and developmental pathology of the infant hip.
  • Demonstrate appropriate scanning technique using the Graf method.
  • Identify, measure, and classify hip morphology accurately on ultrasound.
  • Interpret ultrasound findings to inform DDH management decisions.
  • Outline the key requirements for implementing an effective DDH screening service.
