Overview of Vascular Surgery in Clinical Practice
(Aimed at Medical Students and Foundation Year Doctors)
3rd February 2021
Online Teaching Via Zoom
About
Vascular conditions and disorders are common presentations in surgical practice. Stenosis or occlusive diseases of peripheral arteries of the lower limb can lead to intermittent claudication and/or rest pain, and stenosis or occlusive diseases of the carotid arteries can result in transient ischaemic attacks or strokes. A ruptured aneurysm of large vessels such as the abdominal aorta can be life-threatening. Likewise, venous disorders can result in venous hypertension, chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, and venous ulcers. Both arterial and venous diseases can be debilitating for the patient and result in long-term morbidity. This lecture will cover the theoretical principles of the above conditions, examination techniques, and the essential management principles. It is delivered by Mr S. Rajagopalan, Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the Royal Stoke University Hospital and Senior Lecturer at Keele University Medical School. He is also a surgical tutor in the Doctors Academy MRCS and FRCS examination preparation courses.
