A SUITABLE COURSE FOR STUDENTS WISHING TO LEARN NEW SURGICAL/SUTURING SKILLS AND/OR CONSOLIDATE EXISTING SKILLS.

Delivered using a series of tutor demonstrations and hands-on sessions where participants work on animal tissue.

About the Course

This one-day course, delivered by Keele Surgical Society and Doctors Academy, aims to provide pre-clinical and clinical year medical students with a structured programme to learn basic surgical skills that are common to all surgical fields

The course will use animal tissue to teach participants the basic suturing skills expected from an undergraduate medical student interested.

The course is open to all undergraduate medical students in the United Kingdom.

Medical students will have a great opportunity to participate in a competition during the afternoon. The winner will receive a special certificate and a gift!

On completion of the course, participants should be able to:

Handle commonly used surgical instruments in a safe and effective manner and how to make an incision using surgical instruments
Pick up and safely drive a needle through tissue with accurate bite placement
Perform a simple interrupted suture, simple buried, simple running/continuous suture, vertical mattress + horizontal mattress to close a wound
Participate in a competition with prizes
Network with other medical students and receive advice for a career in surgery from local consultants and trainees
