About
The Welsh National Surgical Conference is an annual collaboration between Cardiff and Swansea Medical Schools, dedicated to promoting surgical education among medical students and junior doctors in Wales.
The event serves as a platform for Medical Students and Foundation Year Doctors to present research, explore surgical innovations, and network with experienced surgeons. The theme for this year’s event, ‘Surgical Frontiers: Navigating Challenges and Opportunities’, aims to inspire participants to confront the challenges presented by the evolving landscape of surgery, encouraging them to view these challenges not merely as obstacles but as potential avenues for personal and professional growth.
The talks delivered by keynote speakers and the workshops will provide valuable insights to encourage attendees to transform these ideas and discussions into strategies. This transformation will enable them to navigate individual challenges and create opportunities for their future careers.
Workshops
Local Flaps
This workshop provides hands-on training in reconstructive surgery techniques, covering the principles of local flap design, tissue mobilisation, and closure.
Lumbar Puncture
This workshop focuses on teaching the essential skills for performing spinal taps, including patient preparation, equipment use, procedural steps, and safety measures.
External Fixation
This workshop provides hands-on experience for attendees on the use of an external device for stabilising and immobilising fractured bones, as well as correcting deformities.
Metacarpal Fixation
This workshop allows attendees to understand the fundamentals of hand
fracture stabilisation and provides hands-on experience with models and tools.
Wound Debridement
This workshop provides practical training in the cleansing and irrigation of wounds related to traumatic injuries or orthopaedic procedures.
STARSurg Academic Surgery
This workshop involves short talks and abstract writing sessions to help medical students understand the importance of academic research in surgery and to allow junior doctors involved in academia to share their experiences and
challenges.
