Cardiff MRCS OSCE Course: Surgical Anatomy and Surgical Pathology

10th and 11th September 2021

Welsh Centre for Anatomical Education, Sir Martin Evans Building, University of Cardiff

About

Taught by clinical anatomists and surgeons, this highly regarded and greatly acclaimed course is intended to help trainees prepare for the surgical anatomy and pathology components of the MRCS OSCE exam. The sessions will be predominantly delivered by small group demonstrations and tutorials using anatomical prosections, relevant pathological specimens, osteology and surface anatomy. This course, which takes into consideration the changes introduced in 2018, will: consolidate the candidate's core and applied surgical knowledge in anatomy and relevant pathology; provide a focused revision of pertinent exam topics in this area, and; aid the candidate's aptitude to handle the OSCE stations effectively. There will be a dedicated teaching session on clinically applied surface anatomy. The mock OSCE stations on the second day of the course will cover surgical anatomy (prosections, osteology and surface anatomy), surgical pathology, surgical radiology, and surgical skills and patient safety.

Reviews

It was very good. It was a really useful overview and a way to consolidate knowledge whilst identifying areas for further learning in the run up to the exam.

Happy to say that I passed. I think the course was invaluable and Prof Enoch did a great job at whipping us through all the important stuff. I personally found the exam challenging (and thought I had failed). As it turns out my scores were good - passing both components. In particular there were a few top tips that we went through that came up that I don't think I would have got had I not attended the course - Z-stitch, specific technique for tying knots (i.e., exactly what the examiners were looking for you to do to gain the points), carcinoid. Generally I think it was a great way to spend the last few days before the exam (where I normally tend to flounder and struggle to motivate myself). Thanks again so much to Prof Enoch for all his hard work. And for you for organising the whole thing.

I am sure that it’s only because of this course that I passed the exam. The part B course was even better than the part A course. I very much enjoyed the teaching as well as the opportunity to test yourself under exam conditions. I appreciate your hard work in order to provide a course despite the COVID pandemic. The exam went well as there were no topics that had not been touched at all during the course. Thanks again to the whole team organising the course, all the examiners and most of all to Prof Enoch for all he’s taught us over the last year.

Pleased to say I passed my exam. I had failed it before so this was a great relief! I thought the course in Cardiff was really good. I can’t think of a specific thing that was taught that definitely helped with exam but for me having a detailed overview of the anatomy gave me confidence in the things I knew and then highlighted areas I needed to look at again. Really glad I went.
